Turning Waste Oil into Candles
People pour used/ waste oil down the drain without even giving it a second thought. Filt, a Japanese company, wants us to change that habit. They collect waste oil from cafes and restaurants, filter it, and turn it into handmade candles.
The process is simple yet the product is beautiful. After the oil is filtered, it is mixed with stearic acid (fatty acids purified from palm). The mix is then colored for visual appeal and scented to suppress the smell of used oil. What makes the candles even better is that they use recycled paper for the wick, beer bottle caps for the core washer, and are packaged in used glass containers rummaged from the recycling bins.
Additionally, because each of their candles are unique, they sell at a premium! Definitely makes one think twice before pouring waste oil down the drain, doesn’t it?
