Developing a Scalable, Modular Construction Set
Construction machines are expensive, high maintenance, and a nightmare to transport in our part of the world. It does not have to be that way anymore. Open Source Ecology have been developing industrial machines that can be made at a fraction of commercial costs, and sharing their designs online for FREE.
Their ‘Global Village Construction Set (GVCS)’ is a modular, low-cost, high-performance platform that allows for the easy fabrication of Industrial Machines. Their set of 50 machines are all it takes to build a small, sustainable civilization with modern comforts. The GVCS in itself consists of many other Construction Sets – as they build not individual machines, but construction sets of machines. As an example, the Fabrication Construction Set component can be used to build any of the other machines. Their goal is lifetime design, and low maintenance so only a few hours of maintenance per year are required to keep any machine alive. Their goal is to demonstrate how these machines contribute to creating a world beyond artificial material scarcity – by creating an open documentation, development, and production platform – towards the open source economy.
By using simple, modular, scalable design and open source collaboration, they are breaking cost barriers and proving that open development is the next industrial revolution. Is it time for us to be a part of that revolution?
